CENTAURS
Where Chiron kept his school, above the sea at Tsangarada
The chestnut forest behind you, the Aegean below
Mornings that start late on the terrace and evenings that end at a long table under the plane trees. A house that asks nothing of you.
- A listed nineteenth-century mansion, restored stone by stone
- Ten thousand square metres of terraced garden, orchard and cypress walk
- A handful of rooms, and a house that is never full
CENTAURS was never built to be a hotel, and it has not been turned into one. It remains a house, with its thick schist walls, its timber ceilings and a fireplace on every floor, and it keeps the habits of a house: breakfast when you wake, a garden to lose a day in, dinner that arrives at the hour you choose.
Discover the houseStone, chestnut and the light of the eastern slope
The mansion is of the old aristocratic Pelion type. Three storeys of grey-brown schist, a central stair hall, shuttered windows that open onto the orchard on one side and the sea on the other. A few steps away stands the paraspito, a two-storey stone pavilion with its own veranda, so that the estate reads as a small historic compound rather than a single building.
The restoration keeps everything that was worth keeping and adds only what comfort requires. Inside, the original stone and timber are paired with linen, walnut and marble, discreet light and generous bathrooms. Nothing hums. Nothing blinks.
Rooms and suites

Where most of the day happens
Rooms that keep the rhythm of the old windows
Each room follows the mansion's original plan, so no two are alike. Most have a fireplace. All have the view they were given a century and a half ago.

Breakfast from the estate, dinner from the village
There is no restaurant at CENTAURS, and this is by design. Breakfast is cooked from the orchard, the kitchen garden and the producers of the surrounding villages, and it lasts as long as you like. Through the day the house keeps wine, small plates and picnics for the grounds. In the evening, dinner comes from a short list of the best tavernas of Tsangarada and Mouresi, or from a visiting cook at the long table under the plane trees.

Stone
Grey stone underfoot, bordered in brown, cool in August.

Walnut
Open wardrobes of walnut and marble, made for the house.

Linen
Linen on the beds and the chairs, the colour of the walls.
The mountain of the Centaurs, where the forest meets the sea
Pelion is the mountain where the centaurs lived and where Chiron, wisest of them, taught Achilles and Jason. It is a place of chestnut and beech forest, stone villages, cobbled mule paths and small beaches at the foot of cliffs. Tsangarada sits high on its eastern slope, facing the open Aegean, and the house arranges every day on the mountain for you.
The whole estate- The village
Tsangarada
Four quarters strung along the slope, each around its own church and square, with the thousand-year-old plane tree of Agia Paraskevi at the centre of village life.
- Below the house
Mylopotamos
Two coves of white pebble joined by an arch in the rock, reached by the old path down from the village. The water is the colour of glass.
- A short drive
Fakistra and Damouchari
A beach beneath the cliffs with a hidden cave, and the old harbour where the mountain's cobbled path ends in the sea.
- On foot
The kalderimia
Centuries-old stone paths linking the villages, through chestnut woods, past springs and chapels, walked with a guide or alone.
- In season
The orchard harvests
Cherries in June, apples and pears in September, chestnuts in October, and the olive and herb gardens through the year.
- In winter
Agriolefkes
Skiing on the mountain's crown in the morning and a swim in the sea by the afternoon, on the days when Pelion allows both.
The first motive was conservation. The mansion was a monument left to the weather, and the only way to save it was to give it a life again. The house came first. The hotel grew out of the house. On the restoration

A house, a pavilion and a garden, taken as one
For a wedding, a retreat or a gathering of family and friends, CENTAURS closes its gate and becomes yours. The cypress avenue, the orchard, the pond with its water lilies, the terraces and the long table are kept for your party alone, with the house's team to run the days as you wish.
